Hawkmom, I feel the same way as you about choice and as for IVF, it freaks me out a little because there's the chance of so many fertilized eggs, like, eight babies at once. Sure there's responsible parents who would abort down to some managable number, but there's also unethical people like octomom and her doctors out there. IVF also feels a little weird to me because it's so expensive just to have a child that is genetically _yours_. Why not adopt a baby? That being said, I think people should have all rights to do IVF, but I think it's a strange choice.

I'm a PP supporter and volunteered as an escort for women at the one in my hometown. I never got to "work", because my husband was assigned somewhere else soon after.

I'm a bit conflicted, as I'm staunchly pro-choice, but have severe moral objections to fertility treatment, namely IVF. I have a hard time reconciling this, because I feel like a bit of a hypocrite. What are your thoughts on the matter, if you don't mind?

I don't think I've ever been as proud of my home town than I am right now.
I went to the local PP a while back with my sister because she didn't want to go in alone and no one even looked at us. Maybe they were just afraid of the "goth" kids or maybe it wasn't that bad then but I'm proud that even in this fairly small, conservative town no one does this.

Soulie- I feel that you are correct in your observation and it peaked my interest so I did some googling and found this.

Apparently pregnancy puts you at lower risk for breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer.

Surely for the hardcore CF, this is not going to convert us (Children scare me way more than cancer, sorry) but it is interesting to see the facts.

I think the reason you hear so much about cancer and mothers is because motherhood is the ultimate way to canonize women into sainthood. The cancer story is more tragic with the presence of children...because her life meant something "more", in the eyes of the mainstream.

Hell, IMO every media story involving tragedy or death is perceived as much more tragic when children are added to the mix.

Korpios- Assholes is almost an understatement here. These people drag themselves out of bed at 7 in the morning to come scream at women. They are sinister, dangerous beings. I really believe that.

Thank you for the kudos and your comment- I have no qualms about admitting I'd have an abortion and I agree with you that more pro-choicers should speak these words to give credence to the cause and more credibility to the CHOICE.

The abortion-clinic protesters are assholes, pure and simple — and I say that as a non-liberal white male who also happens to be pro-choice and childfree. What the clinic needs is a couple of armed guards (even if they're volunteers) who can escort clients in and out so they have something of a shield against the "OMG abortion evil!" scum.

"Without shame or hesitation, I would abort. End of story."

Bravo — I wish more women had that sort of resolve, instead of the wishy-washy "well I support abortion, but I couldn't possibly have one myself" shooting-us-in-the-foot rhetoric. Still, it would be better to never have to fear pregnancy at all, but it's a shame that sterilization for females is a fairly invasive surgery — I get off lucky there as a male, and I love my vasectomy. ^_^

Thank you for taking a stand and volunteering in women's best interests. Everyone who can, should and anyone who can't, should donate. We ALL benefit when women receive good health care and when children are wanted and cared for. No one should be forced to have a child she does not want, and countering the protests and misinformation and outright lies is so important. Thank you.

"Abortion causes breast cancer".

I find it kind of funny when I read about protesters saying stuff like this.

If you go to a newsagents and look at the womens magazines, half the stories are about a mother-of-two dying of cancer, or a mother-of-whatever who fought breast cancer several times.

Please don't think I'm making light of how painful and life-changing cancer is (one of my CF college mates has fought and beaten cancer and she's only 21), what I'm saying is that the majority of published cancer survival stories are about mothers.

That said, the stories never mention whether the woman had ever had an abortion, only that they have kids now.
